9:00 a.m.: Keynote Speaker—Matt Emerzian, Every Monday Matters

Matthew Emerzian created Every Monday Matters (EMM) to communicate that it is the plain, simple, ordinary individual, either acting alone or together with others, who can change the world. EMM promotes the fact that people have the power. People matter and they have the power to make change. Like voting in an election, every vote counts. No matter how big or small the actions, they matter. You'll be inspired by Matt's approach to community engagement.

10:15 a.m.: Stories from Trenches—How to Be Proactive in a Budget Crisis

A panel discussion with PIOs on media relations and other strategies that are effective in communicating budget issues. Moderated by Frank Kwan, Director of Communications, Los Angeles County Office of Education. 1:00 p.m.: CPR for the Toxic Workplace—Tom DeLapp, Communication Resources for Schools

Schools are a “people business,” but are some of your people behaving like a virus and plaguing your district’s effectiveness? This fast-paced, humorous interactive session offers practical techniques for dealing with the various types of difficult people that can negatively affect your district’s image, reputation and brand. Learn how workplace bullies, hostile aggressive personalities, passive subverters, time bandits and psychic vampires may be sucking the life out of your best laid plans. Through small group exercises, you will explore how C.P.R. (Communication, Protocols and Responses) can help de-tox your professional environment.

3:00 p.m.: Communications Planning—Hands-on Session

Do you need to re-tool or begin your communications plan? Seasoned CalSPRA pros will be on hand to allow one-on-one or small group review of your plan.
